Day One – Project Inception

Today was the introductory meeting for the Robots@OD project. All three of the development team and the two product owners met to discuss the project and how exactly it will progress throughout the three week duration. In this project, we shall use github extensively to document, report issues, set milestones and manage source code, in an organised fashion so that the project can be taken and extended at a further date. It was also decided that a ‘SCRUM’ inspired method of project organisation shall be used, including the process of having daily scrum meetings to report issues and assign tasks.

After the meeting, the three developers discussed ideas and came to the following conclusions:

  • A raspberry pi will be used mounted on a roomba, in combination with an ASUS Xtion Pro Live.
  • ROS (robot operating system: http://www.ros.org) will be setup on the robot to process data recieved from the sensors.
  • A host PC (peer-to-peer) will be setup to connect to the raspberry pi (using ssh) to set robot state and recieve data back so that visualisations can be displayed on the control PC.

Finally, we decided what general tasks to assign to each member, including Mike working on Pi setup and driver management, Pete working on hardware setup for the roomba/pi platform and Jonathan working on ROS related work to do with Roomba ROS stacks.
